Thinking about Canada FBA - Is it worth it for a US seller? (My product's already selling there!)
Hey everyone,
I'm hoping to get some real-world insights from anyone who's ventured into selling on Amazon.ca with FBA after starting in the US.
Here's my situation: I've got a product which is selling really well on Amazon.com right now. What's cool is that I've seeing quite a few orders actually coming in from Canadian buyers, even though they're purchasing from my US listing.
Right now, they're paying extra for shipping and import fees (I've seen it add up to about $9-$10 USD on top of the product price). This got me thinking:
If Canadians are already buying it despite these extra costs, would it make sense to send inventory directly to Amazon FBA in Canada?
My main questions are:
1. Is the juice worth the squeeze? For those of you who did it, did you see a noticeable increase in sales volume and profitability once your product was available locally with Prime shipping in Canada? Or are Canadian buyers so used to buying from the US that it doesn't make a huge difference?
2. What's the real talk on setting it up? I know I'd need to register for a Business Number (BN) and handle GST/HST, and definitely use a DDP freight forwarder. But what are the hidden gotchas? Any horror stories or surprising complexities with Canadian customs, taxes, or specific FBA requirements (like bilingual labeling)?
3. Does it become a money pit with extra fees/taxes? My biggest fear is that after all the duties, import GST/HST, broker fees, and new FBA fees, the product ends up costing me just as much (or more!) to sell in Canada, eating into my margins. How do you manage to stay profitable?
4. Any major differences from US FBA? Beyond the obvious tax stuff, anything else structurally different or unexpectedly tricky compared to managing inventory and listings in Amazon.com?
I'm really trying to figure out if this is a smart next step or just a tempting mirage. Any advice, war stories, or "do's and don'ts" would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks a bunch in advance!

We did a small amount of Amazon CA FBA sales until the beginning of this year. As soon as our government instituted tariffs and started spouting off about "51st state" not only did our Canadian sales plummet, but we started getting huge numbers of returns as soon as people saw "Made in USA" on the packaging. We usually do a shipment every spring to an FC near YYZ but that's not happening this year, maybe not ever again.
The import/export costs are significant for small shipments over the border, which will force you to raise pricing to levels that are uncomfortable for many Canadian customers for low-priced goods.
