Who is responsible for paying Italian import duties? The seller or the buyer?

hi

We currently have a couple of seller self-delivery orders to Italy, and the same problem with these orders is that the buyer tells us that the import duties are responsible by the seller.

We've asked customer service and searched the internet and still don't know who is responsible for the import duties incurred by Amazon Self-Delivery.

Additionally, what is VAT on Amazon and does it include import duties?

Best regards,

My understanding has always been to deliver duty paid and that customers should not be subject to customs delays and additional customs duties and taxes. So the seller is responsible for these costs.

I can onyl currently find this page which states it applies to orders outside the EU - though it could be that the page hasn't been updated since the UK was in the EU.

Not sure what you mean by Amazon Self-Delivery, but if it means you are sending the item there are no import duties UK to EU.

There is is however VAT to pay which Amazon will have collected if the order value is under 150 Euro. Amazon will have supplied you with their IOSS number.

Customer should not have to pay the VAT again.

The seller is responsible.

Amazon policy is that the Buyer should not face any additional charges or costs to what they pay at the time of purchase.

That said, where are you sending from and how much is the value of the order? If you're sending from outside the EU and the order value is less than 150 EURO, Amazon should have already charged the taxes and you should be using the IOSS system to get it through customs without additional charges.

If it's being shipped within the EU, you need to look up the OSS system.

If the order value is over 150 EURO, then you need to be using a delivered duties paid service, or need to proactively pay the duties somehow.
