Atlanta USPS Meltdown - Amazon should post advisory

It's all over local news now and complaints have gotten to where both U.S. senators and other local officials are getting involved. Massive numbers of packages and letters FROM and TO the greater Atlanta region are being delayed, often for weeks.

The culprit is the bungled opening of a "state of the art" processing center in Palmetto, GA, a suburb, on Feb. 24. Training problems, operational problems or what-not have led to massive backups and delays being common. This affects all kinds of mail going from and to addresses in North Georgia. I would compare the service impact to getting hit with a destructive natural disaster, like a hurricane, both in extent and duration. Amazon should post an advisory.

I am in the affected area and started getting buyer messages and now a trickle of A-Zs and looked into it on my Internet postage software. It was really alarming, comparable to the worst of the pandemic era.

I looked at the mailout dates Feb. 21 thru March 11 (a week before I'm posting this, to give it time).

In that time period I mailed out 45 total items. All should have been delivered by now based on USPS delivery times, and all are to the 48 US. Only 15 of the 45 are showing as delivered as I write this.

Of the 30 still outstanding, 29 are still stalled in the Atlanta area according to the delivery confirms. A typical delay between scans once stalled is 2-3 weeks.

The complaints that have gotten the senators and local officials involved and contacting Louis DeJoy, the postmaster general, are mostly about missing incoming mail that's important (prescriptions, checks, etc.), though I'm sure they're also hearing from businesses.

Why not switch to UPS or someone else? That would force a price increase that I'm concerned the market will not support because the items are low-value. My packages also are considered "odd-sized" by some carriers (cylindrical, approaching 2 feet long in some cases), and any significant surcharges against that are deal-breakers for other carriers. Though I will continue to investigate options.

As in the pandemic meltdowns (that peaked in summer 2022, IIRC), the trickle of A-Zs affecting ODR is maddening, and Amazon is unhelpful with its automated "package may be lost" message after X number of days. No, the package isn't lost, and that's just uninformed speculation without any information on Amazon's part. I always encourage people to get it straight from the horse's mouth on the carrier's website without that filter, but some see it as "proof" the item is lost even though Amazon can declare no such thing.

Maybe I need to start insuring everything and if it goes past 30 days, file a claim. Most aren't that extreme, and I have both the handling and delivery times already close to maxed as a defensive measure. Have not been in the get-it-there-yesterday business since the pandemic problems.

Still, many buyers start wanting refunds well before 30 days and there's the moral-hazard problem in refunding on an item you're still 99% sure they will receive. Not news to anyone and no empathy is being asked for here. This is intended to inform.

I'd be happy to provide local-media links from the past week as background on this problem, but the bot would strip them out. My own problems with this aside, I think it merits an advisory similar to what we get with severe weather or major hurricane damage in places because the service impact is comparable. Also might be helpful for those who have an easier time shifting to another carrier to avoid the problem, as it's also delaying incoming mail.

Wow. Just looked it up. One news story shows hundreds of trucks lined up outside the new distribution center waiting to load and unload.

This is like the worst days of the pandemic. We had customers who got Priority Mail packages weeks or months late.

Amazon should definitely issue advisories for customers and adjust delivery guarantees accordingly.

I just heard about this from one of the clerks at my local post office yesterday. It seems to me that Amazon is not directing sales my way due to this issue. We are here in the SE as well and typically get a large number of our sales from this region because we ship via USPS to keep everyone's costs reasonable. We are looking at adding other shipping options, even if we lose a few dollars, because not selling to our region is not sustainable, either. We'd rather lose some money in shipping and still make something than the very slow sales we're having right now.

I am empathetic to your plight with having unusual sized items. Can you use UPS Surepost or FedEx Smartpost? That would get it out of your region and then the last mile would be delivered by USPS where there hopefully won't be any other issues. I don't know the size limits on Surepost or Smartpost, though. I only noticed them recently on the shipping templates. It might be worth investigating?

Just keeps getting worse. I check the overview in Endicia and nothing getting delivered. Two on 3/18 and nothing showing since. FWIW, I also ordered coupons on the 'bay about a week ago that'd come in an envelope as first class mail. Those usually sail through and are machinable but that hasn't arrived yet, either. Have also noticed fewer people lately at the post office, so word must've gotten out. Just a terrible look for the USPS, and need more support from Amazon.

NEW UPDATE: No improvement in service on USPS side, almost nothing getting delivered or leaving Atlanta area.

I looked at the date range on the Internet postage software again today, this time Feb. 21 - March 19.

Feb. 21 was the start of problems (the disastrous distribution center opening being Feb. 24), while March 19 was a week ago. If the USPS were operating normally then 100% would be delivered by now.

In that time, 63 total items were sent out and only 17 total have been delivered. (Even from as far back as Feb. 21). Of the 46 still outstanding, all but less than a handful are still tracked to somewhere in the Atlanta area.

Meanwhile, the A-Zs pile up and it's now at the "urgent phone call" stage, even though every single one is an INR from this service meltdown and Amazon should be fully aware of the problems.

I've paused all advertising, extended out delivery times to the max (am glad I'm not having Amazon set those) and sales have slowed to maybe 1 or 2 a day, sometimes zero. I check the overall view on the postage software daily and will see pretty quickly if there's improvement in the USPS situation.

About all that's left is to put the whole thing on vacation status, but then it's harder to see if the USPS has its act together.

The number of A-Z claims we are receiving due to USPS delays and lost packages in Atlanta is ridiculous. USPS has managed to completely ruin our 15+ year business in a matter of 2 months on Amazon. Customers are getting refunded and we are having USPS lose our products with no updates on tracking. Ebay is working with sellers in Georgia and wish that Amazon would do the same.
