How long do orders remain in a "pending" status?

I have many orders that have been in a "pending" status for 3+ weeks now. For one of my items, all of the inventory I currently have is tied up in pending orders.

How long does Amazon wait before canceling the orders? Is there any way to cancel them myself? If so, does canceling orders have any potential to reflect negatively on my account health?

"Is there any way to cancel them myself?"

NO, you can't cancel a 'pending' order. Since they don't show any contact information you can't even send a message asking the 'buyer' what the problem is.

The ONLY time I had any success was when I suspected a competing seller was behind the orders. I sent a message to Seller Support asking them to PLEASE review the order as I suspected another seller was behind it. I gave the reasons (based on some communications) why I thought that.

It took a couple days but the pending orders disappeared.

Unless you have a reason (and ability to prove) another seller nothing can be done. They should drop off pretty soon though because three weeks is really long, even for Amazon!

Consider setting a number for the MAX quantity that a buyer can order at one time. That way if someone wants to play silly games they will have to place multiple orders!

If you are low in inventory it's possible that your units never reach "Available". And we all know that FC processing indeed can take 3 weeks. Try to send more inventory for at least a considerable quantity becomes available. Then the Open Orders should decrease.

I've had a book in pending now for 2 weeks. And no sales for 4 days. Amazon is completely PATHETIC.

I have several orders in pending status that are a month old. I am sold out of the units at FBA, so those orders are just tying them up unnecessarily. There's no way to cancel. You have to wait for Amazon to decide when too long is too long. In the meantime your inventory remains tied up.

On the FBA side of things, we have orders that have been pending for well over two months. I don't lose sleep over it, but you need ways to protect yourself in case of bad actors.

As @Seller_kIukTwdhvntAp suggested, we have MAX quantity in place to make it harder for bad actors to place multiple large-quantity orders to hold up your available inventory while using a fake payment method that continues to send the Amazon payment system into a loop of holding.

Another thing we tend to notice is that during holidays, more orders will sit in "pending" status, which could be just your usual retail theft with stolen credit cards.

Lastly, it could have something to do with the dropshipper. Full transparency, we have 0 knowledge of how that's being done so this is just us speculating based on the available information. But when one of our listings shows up on eBay (someone was drop shipping it to a SE Asian country), that particular ASIN sees an insane amount of upticks of orders in "pending" status ranging from 2 weeks to upward a month. Some dropped off, and some eventually went through. Once we VeRo the seller (the shop was straight up ripping our images/logos etc), it stopped.

if they are going to come through about 30 minutes, or they will sit there in limbo until the customer fixes their payment (most times that is the problem)

or it is competitor buying your items so you lose the buy box (0 quantity) which is very black-hatted but it happens

I have the same issue, the pending orders now is over 350 from August till now. I asked Amazon supporter and they said because these orders are awaiting payment, they haven't been shipped. But it's not reasonable because the same issue happen with MCF orders (we sell on other channel and Amazon ship) where no need waiting payment. I think there is an error with Amazon system. Hope they can find and fix soon.
