Book listings shown as active but are nowhere to be found.

Over the last few years I have reduced my book listings on Amazon and moved to eBay. I decided to try Amazon again but have discovered that I have been wasting my time. When I go to manage listings I am repeatedly running across books that are shown as active but, when I go to check on them, I find that many are not listed on their respective page. . Amazon wants me to fill out individual forms for each disappeared listing.. I simply do not have the time or energy to dispute this situation one item at a time.

I started selling on Amazon in 2002. After 10 years I closed my account for health reasons. A year later I was in a better situation and decided to renew my Amazon account. As it turned out I had to start over with a new seller ID and, in that process, lost about 1,000 positive feedbacks. I went ahead with the new moniker and, for a few years, sales returned to the previous level. Then the bottom dropped out...thieves and gangs took over the site and routinely harass and target honest sellers with no intervention from Amazon. Just the opposite, they are encouraging a multitude of thugs to lie, cheat, and steal. Pathetic...

You have probably already done this, but try searching for one of your books as an Amazon customer.

What shows up first is any Amazon Kindle edition.

Then the paperback, if available, and after that the hardcover, if Amazon sells them.

Buried 5-8 screens later, if the buyer has not already purchased, and is quite persistent, are the books of Amazon 3rd party sellers, many of whom have been selling books here for10+ years.

Good luck selling any used books on Amazon now.

This scheme has been in place for several months, and you are not the only suffering bookseller.

Birdnutz,

This site can be a lesson in frustration .. as selg_inc has noted .. (imo as well) the somewhat recent change as to how buyers now see books' listed for sale here is a convoluted mess (especially in the vintage category where many of my titles are listed) .. previously a buyer could click on a new/used or a collectible copy because it was easily laid out (visually) and totally understandable to the buyer actually looking at it. Now a buyer has to "know" what copy they want .. paperback or mass market (clearly Amazon pushes the kindle if applicable) .. and the issue there is not every listing originator on vintage titles "cared" about accuracy .. which carries over to today. I long ago stopped trying to get this site to "correct" incorrect info .. I literally could spend months but It's not worth it because it rarely if ever changes.

Slightly different from your experience .. but I too sell books and for a few years there were titles I could see but I suspected buyers could not. Several months ago, one of my repeat customers requested a hard copy of titles by a specific author be mailed to her . Upon receipt of that info, this buyer was unable to see 2 of the titles I had listed (but showing as active to me) via Amazon's catalog. This confirmed something I'd suspected.

The culprit in this case was any listing I had under "unknown binding" .. would show as active to me but not to any buyer searching. I then deleted every title that came up via search with "unknown binding" and re-listed those titles on Ebay. I had resisted (for years) opening a seller's account on EBAY .. I wish I had done it years ago because it has been excellent. I can curate collections there .. my listings are my own and accurate (something that is sadly hit or miss with the many vintage titles I sell here) .. I have an actual storefront that is unique to my listings (not co-mingled with other sellers) and done in a format that is intuitive and buyer friendly .. I do not accept returns (to be fair I've had zero issues on that front here on Amazon) .. and after my first 10 sales late last year .. I get paid by Ebay in 2 days .. not 2 or 3 weeks as it is here oh and I have no reserve on Ebay.

Many have speculated that this site is doing a slow boil to push out 3P media sellers .. I don't know if that is true or not .. what I do know is every change made by this site specific to book sellers in the last few years including the new one being rolled out (manage all inventory page) seems designed to hinder and aggravate instead of helping. As I said .. frustrating.

Best of luck .. KJ @Seller_ITSm6TMeixAhB

We have the SAME exact situation. I've had to fight with "support" to reactivate some of them, but when you have hundreds of such instances (which across all the amazon platforms we do), it's a losing battle.

BY DEFINITION if a book shows as "active" in one's inventory, it MUST be active. Amazon is guilty of misclassifying inventory items and this is NOT GOOD. On 2 occasions in the past year I've had senior team leadership acknowledge this fault in their system. They just have not done anything to remedy the problem.

I've been selling used books in Amazon since 2001 (do the math). It's great fun. I will routinely reduce prices if/when it seems appropriate to me. But I don't like being told to sell at prices that provide what I call "negative profit" aka selling at an actual loss. What gives Amazon the right to do that? It's intolerable. I love Amazon but a few policies will continue to irk me. I love finding books, holding them often for years, then finally finding a buyer who appreciates the item at the price offered. I have to make some money -- sorry, not sorry !! And almost every single buyer seems very fair and not prone to dishonesty at all. They're all great, I'll just say that because there's always a few bad apples.

I just had this issue with a book on amazon.jp.

Here is the SECRETIVE, UNHELPFUL, IRRATIONAL reply from their seller "support" :

----

Regarding why the ASIN: 0674993721 was search suppressed, we have confirmed that our specialty team put search suppression on that ASIN intentionally.

However, we are afraid that we are unable to disclose the detailed reason why such search suppression was applied to that ASIN.Also, the listing status will be displayed as "Active" when this type of search suppression is applied due to the specification of our system. In addition, we and our specialty team do not have list of ASINs which have been search suppressed for the same reason as the above ASIN.

For this reason, unfortunately there is no way to confirm how many other items have been suppressed yet showing as "Active" in your Manage Inventory page.We apologize for the inconvenience or concern regarding the use of our site, but we appreciate your kind understanding and cooperation.

They're all great, I'll just say that because there's always a few bad apples.

bots seem to like to randomly remove the browse nodes from listings. it could've been that.
